Oysters and Thundercats this week!

Two Cornish events this week – the first one is the Falmouth Oyster Festival this Thursday 10th to Sunday 13th October, and the second is the Thundercats (sorry, not the cartoon) Power Boat Racing at Watergate Bay 11th to 13th October.

So, to start off the oyster dredging season, the Falmouth Oyster Festival promises to offer some of the finest oysters to be found, along with a diverse mix of additional Cornish seafood caught in the region. There will be many activities such as cooking demos by leading local chefs, local ale, children’s shell painting, a town parade, live music and much more!

If that doesn’t ‘float your boat’ (excuse the pun!) then there is always the Thundercats Power Boat Racing where spectators can watch the action-packed races from the shore to see who will make world champion!

With views over Watergate Bay, this 2 bedroom apartment (1 double, 1 twin) on the Porth side of Newquay still has some availability for this weekend. A brilliant location for sea, sand, surf and that all important beachside pub 400 yards away!

Londoners prefer sunshine – don’t we all?

In a new survey of Londoners’ holiday preferences, unsurprisingly, 50% prefer holidays in the sunshine.

The ebookers.com survey of nearly 2,000 Londoners also found that a happy holiday consisted of sightseeing (62% of respondents) and hassle-free travel (61%). To add to this, 30% said that beach holidays were their favourite type of vacation.

These results led to the “staycation” maintaining its popularity with 15% of Londoners stating that some of their happiest holidays have been in the UK.

Combine the wish for the beach and the contented holidaymakers in the UK and you’ve got a perfect recipe for a brilliant holiday in one of our many holiday cottages. Why not try beautiful Devon, or Cornwall for instance?

Cottage expansion

West Country cottage specialists, Helpful Holidays, report booming business and are expanding into North and East Devon for 2011 with an increase in properties in both these regions. Other areas seeing growth for next year include Exmoor, Somerset, the coast near Newquay and the far west of Cornwall.

Offering holidays for nearly 30 years, the agency continues to see very high levels of enquiries from both holidaymakers and home owners.

“It may be as a result of the current economic climate and euro exchange rate, or concern about the environmental impact of flying, but more people are planning holidays in the UK,” says general manager Moray Bowater.

“Booking levels were excellent in 2010, helped by a growing awareness that England, and in particular the West Country, has some of the most beautiful landscapes in the world,” continued Mr Bowater. “Bookings for 2011 are looking good; we are confident that the market for top level, self-catering accommodation will continue to grow.”

Many of Helpful Holidays’ properties are exceptionally plush and the agency has a reputation for offering big and beautiful places, with 68 of its houses sleeping ten or more.
