Kate and William’s wedding date cause for holidays!

So the date has been announced and contrary to popular speculation the wedding will be on 29th April 2011. This date will have many people rejoicing as it has been announced as a public holiday and comes after the Easter holidays and just before the next Bank Holiday. This means that, including weekends, workers will only have to go in to work three days out of a period of eleven. Many, however will take this opportunity to book off those three days to have a nice long holiday!

Some people are moaning that this is a bad case for businesses, but for the UK holiday cottage market this will be a brilliant time of boom! The weather at that time of year is often rather lovely with the first signs of sunshine that always gets our hopes up for a hot summer to come.

The date has been talked about in many of the papers and online so far already, so I imagine people will be booking their time off work and looking for a holiday cottage, so get in quick for the best deals on our main site holidaycottages.cc go soon! Remember that we have holiday cottages across the UK, so if you can think of a place, I’m confident we’ll have a cottage there or close by! If you’re looking further afield and plan to travel abroad, our sister site, villaseek.com has a large array of holiday villas also!

Royal wedding good for UK tourism

Love it or loath it, Royal events do make an impact on tourism and the latest announcement of Prince William and Kate Middleton’s engagement with the wedding set to be some time in the new year means a boost for UK tourism.

The date for the wedding has not yet been set, but is planned for Spring or Summer. The overseas travel industry will hope that a date is set soon for a Spring wedding so that there is less impact on next year’s bookings. However, according to the calendar of Royal events, August looks like the most likely month which may mean Brits will delay their holidays, or take them in the UK, which is great news for UK tourism.

An ABTA spokesman said: “This is the best possible showcase for the UK as a travel destination and will present great business opportunities for inbound and domestic tour operators and for ABTA travel agents wanting to sell packages to London.”

Sandie Dawe, chief executive of VisitBritain, said: “This is absolutely wonderful news for William and Kate. It will also be an enormous boost for the British tourism industry.

“Our research indicates that in a typical year the places, events and history associated with Monarchy generate well over £500 million in revenue for the British tourism industry. We would expect that in a Royal Wedding year we would do even better than that.”

Mary Rance, chief executive of Ukinbound added: “Yesterday’s announcement of the Royal Engagement between Prince William and Kate Middleton is not only fantastic news for the couple and their respective families, but could also be a cause for celebration for the UK’s inbound tourism industry.

“All eyes will be on London as the marriage will be broadcast to hundreds of countries worldwide and millions will descend upon the city to be part of the festivities, providing a vital boost to visitor numbers.”

Will you delay your holiday or take a break in the UK because of the wedding?

Welcome to Yorkshire won the ‘World’s leading marketing campaign 2010′ last night at the, The World Travel Awards, also known as the ‘Oscars of travel’ to those in the trade.

Welcome to Yorkshire’s chief executive Gary Verity said: “Winning this award crowns an incredible 18 months for tourism in Yorkshire. We have promoted Yorkshire’s unique and diverse attractions across the county, across the UK and across the world and the response has been phenomenal.

“Visitor numbers to Yorkshire are up, interest in our county is up and the profile of Yorkshire as a tourism destination has never been higher.”

The adverts highlighting the wide variety of activities and places to visit in Yorkshire included the strap-line ‘A long weekend in Yorkshire just isn’t enough’ and was played on TV, in cinemas and online to create a 22% increase in visitors over the past 18 months.

British Tourism Week Pier Parties

British Tourism Week is set to be celebrated in style with simultaneous seaside pier parties organised from 12th-20th March 2011. British Tourism Week is to raise awareness of the importance of domestic tourism to the UK economy and with this set to rise by 5% and create an additional 225,000 jobs over the next 10 years, then there may be a good reason to celebrate and promote this importance.

Details of the parties will be unveiled at a pre-launch event tomorrow on R S Hispaniola on London’s Victoria Embankment. To date, 29 of the existing 55 piers have indicated that they will take part in what will be one of the biggest linked parties ever held at different locations in the UK.

VisitEngland and VisitBritain saved!

Brilliant news for VisitEngland and VisitBritain as the Government has announced that their services will be retained and avoid fatal cuts that will befall other organisations. Budgets will be reduced however; but the extent of these remains to be seen.

VisitBritain chief executive Sandie Dawe said: “I am pleased the Review of Arm’s Length Bodies has recognised the important role of VisitBritain in promoting Britain as a tourism destination around the world. We now await confirmation of our budget next week.

“We have a huge task ahead to deliver the Government‘s ambition to generate a sustained increase in tourism as a result of the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games.

“Thankfully we have a clearer mission from Government than ever before and unprecedented engagement from ministers. We have a plan for the Games that is equal to the job and we are already years down the road to success.

“Last year 30 million overseas tourists visited the UK, spending £16 billion – making tourism the UK’s third foreign exchange earner. Spending by foreign visitors is forecast to almost double to £31 billion in 2020, growing 4.4% a year.’’

VisitEngland chief executive James Berresford said: “We are working closely with the tourism minister and his team on his new tourism strategy and will continue to work in close partnership with the industry to deliver a high quality, highly memorable and enjoyable experience for visitors.

“Tourism is a hugely important economic driver and is one of but a few sectors that if properly supported can offer real growth potential. England in particular is a remarkable destination and a real powerhouse in UK tourism. It alone represents 84 per cent of the total UK tourism value, worth £97billion, and supports in excess of 2 million jobs.”

All eyes will now be on the budget cuts, but as one of the fastest growing economies in Britain, it would have been rather short sighted of the Government to rid the country of these organisations.

Manchester Food and Drink Festival

Today marks the start of the Manchester Food and Drink Festival until Monday 11th October. Visitors of Manchester will find many food and drink events and stalls taking over the city centre, but the festival will also spread to different districts of Greater Manchester also, check out the full listings at the official Manchester Food and Drink Festival website.

There are several mini-festivals under the umbrella of the main festival, these include the Chocolate Festival (Saturday at midday) where you could win a year’s worth of dining out in Manchester if you find a golden ticket in one of the chocolates; and the Ale Festival (tonight and Saturday), both in Albert Square.

Other events include Dinner on River by Robert Owen Brown and Oktoberfest with German beer brand Kaiserdom.

If you’re not too bothered about planning your visits, then pop down to the festival hub in Albert Square throughout the festival period and just have a mill around and see what’s on offer. I’ll be popping down on Sunday afternoon I think, although tomorrow’s Chocolate Festival is certainly tempting too…Decisions, decisions!

Welcome to Yorkshire!

Welcome to Yorkshire is the only English tourist board that has been shortlisted to be the world’s leading tourism board in the World Travel Awards. It will compete with the likes of Australia, India, Jamaica, Maldives, Las Vegas, Cancun and New York.

“We are in illustrious and esteemed company but that is where Yorkshire belongs. Yorkshire is a world class tourist destination and our nomination recognises that.

“As England’s only representative in the category, Yorkshire can be very proud already. We are a leading example to the rest of the country of how successful tourism can be and we hope we can do the county and the country proud and win.”

The ceremony is on 7th November in London. Vote for Welcome to Yorkshire at the World Travel Awards website.

Theatre is UK’s “Hidden Opportunity”

A new report by VisitBritain indicates that foreign visitors who saw a theatre show on their trip are more likely to recommend the UK to friends in comparison to those who didn’t go to one.

The findings show that a tenth of the 30m travellers who came to the UK in 2009 went to see a production but while the theatre is not initially the deciding factor for a trip to the UK, visitors found it enhanced their visit so much that “ those who did go are much more likely to recommend the UK as a holiday destination than other travellers to this country.”

The report also adds: “Word of mouth is the most powerful way that overseas visitors find out about the magic of London’s theatre. The growth of social media such as Facebook and Twitter means that gossip about just how good theatre is in London has the potential to spread more widely.”

It wasn’t just London that attracted the theatre crowds, all regions in the UK saw overseas visitors going to the theatre. In 2009, Scotland’s cities attracted 120,000, the south-west 106,000 and the south-east (outside London) attracted 235,000.

Chief executive VisitBritain Sandie Dawe said: “Britain has a phenomenal theatre industry. Whether it is a feel good musical like Billy Elliot or Mamma Mia, a Shakespearean tragedy, grand opera or beautiful ballet, you are never far from a world class experience.

“This report shows that British theatre is making a massive contribution to Britain’s economy. Everyone can follow the worldwide debate about the cultural attractions that Britain has to offer on our LoveUK page on Facebook and Twitter.”

Art galleries and museums popular destinations

Among the 30 million inbound visits in 2009, 4.2 million included visits to art galleries and 7.7 million to museums, earning the country a combined income of £1 billion in revenue from overseas tourists.

The statistics come from the International Passenger Survey in which VisitBritain sponsored questions on a range of activities visitors may have undertaken during their stay.

The French proved the top museum fans just ahead of American, Germans and Spanish tourists. Americans topped the list for art galleries with well over 500,000 visits.

Sandie Dawe, chief executive, VisitBritain said: “This survey showcases the international appeal of Britain’s culture and heritage – where else could you see Grand Masters next to cutting edge installations, a Spitfire hanging next to a Dali?

“We are fortunate in the authenticity of what we have to promote and the connections that our rich culture makes across the world.”

ETOA calls for changes to tax and visas

The European Tour Operators Association recommends that the UK join the Schengen visa scheme to “double our income for newer markets”  and that tax levels need to change if the UK is to increase its inbound tourism.

ETOA has drawn up recommendations for boosting inbound tourism in response to prime minster David Cameron’s speech last week in which he said he wanted to see the UK in the top five tourist destinations in the world (See previous blog here).

The organisation says tourism should have higher status in government, it also attacked cuts on VisitBritain’s promotional budget.

Executive director Tom Jenkins said: “VAT should not apply to exports. Tourism is an export but the creation of holidays in the UK for visitors from abroad is subject to VAT – that’s clearly disadvantageous to tourism exports.

“However, the creation of holidays for UK residents outside the EU is free of VAT – the VAT regime is insane because there is a massive tax incentive to holiday abroad. This urgently needs to be changed.”

Current Visas to the UK are charged at £68 with forms to be filled out in English, whereas it said we’d become more competitive if the UK joined the Schengen system.

“Anyone buying a Schengen visa (at a cost of €60) gets 25 countries to visit. If we could accept that visa, then we could start to double our income from newer markets.”
